As South Carolina’s first Rape Crisis Center, established in 1974, Julie Valentine Center is recognized as a leader in the field. In 2016, the Center made history by hiring the first Rape Crisis/ CAC Chaplain and creating a nationally recognized model for spiritual care services for survivors and their families. Julie Valentine Center was instrumental in the passage of the first rape kit legislation in South Carolina in 2020 establishing the state’s rape kit tracking system. Julie Valentine Center has been working to stop child abuse and sexual assault before it happens, reduce trauma, and re-establish safety for victims and their families for 50 years.
Julie Valentine Center is named for an infant who was found abandoned and deceased in a field in Greenville County. She was found the day before Valentine’s Day and was named Julie after a Law Enforcement Victim Advocate. For more than 30 years, the community did not know who her family was, yet they adopted her as their own. In 2019, thanks to the dedicated team of law enforcement investigators, solicitors, and community partners, the cold case was finally solved including the identification of a second baby who had been abandoned 10 months prior to her. In 2023, Julie Valentine’s mother was convicted and sentenced. Although true justice is never served when young lives are lost, Julie Valentine is victorious over injustice every single day that someone walks through our doors. She and her brother lost their lives, but hundreds of lives have been saved because of her and we are reminded of it every day.
Julie Valentine Center provides free confidential services and resources regardless of race, color, creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, disabilities, genetic information, gender identity and expression, religion, national origin or veteran's status to support victims of sexual assault, incest, child abuse and neglect in Greenville County, South Carolina.
